Who We Are
The INCOCOA groups have all been created independently by groups of researchers with a common interest in improving knowledge sharing and coordination of activities in their areas of research. The first two of the INCOCOA groups, INGENIC for cocoa breeders and geneticists and INCOPED for crop protection scientists, were created in 1994 and 1995 respectively and were joined in 2005 by INAFORESTA for those with an interest in cocoa agroforestry. Although the groups were created independently, they all benefitted from the support of COPAL (Alliance of Cocoa Producing Countries) which allowed them to hold their workshops to coincide with the International Cocoa Research Conferences held in 1996, 2000,2003, 2006, 2009 and 2012. These events provided an excellent platform for those involved in cocoa research to come together and share their knowledge and experiences.
We are delighted that three new INCOCOA groups have been recently been created. These are INCOSOM (Cocoa and Soil management), INCOQUALITY (Quality along the value chain) and INCOSOCIO (Social-cultural and economic aspects of cocoa and enabling policies). We are grateful to the organisers and sponsors (ICCO, Govt. of Peru, CRUK and Mars) of the International Symposium on Cocoa Research (Lima, 2017) for providing us with an opportunity to meet and discuss our plans for the future development of these groups.
